The thrill of splitting a home grown pumpkin is peculiarly satisfying.  First there’s the fun of choosing which of the beauties to use (the down side is one less to use for table displays!), before taking a large knife to pierce the skin and running through to halve.  Pulling the halves gently apart causes a crisp, crunching sound…followed by the wonder at the vision of dense, bright orange flesh. It’s tough work on the shoulders (get it wrong & you could put your back out – especially with some old varieties like triamble!).  

This fantastic specimen found its way into pumpkin, apple & ginger soup for a happy Sunday lunch.
