The countdown has begun: our AUTUMN OPEN GARDEN WEEKEND is just a week away, on 2 & 3 MAY!
We survived the tumultuous weather system this week, are delighted the dams are full for the first time in several years and have our fingers crossed there will be no more rain just now.
We (Larry, me) and our guest cooks & stallholders very much hope you will join us during the course of the weekend, for what we think will make a truly delightful day out. For those who haven't been to Glenmore before, we're only an hour from Sydney, on the pretty, unspoilt side of Camden, where the hills are lush and green and our next door farmer's cows still come in for milking each day (providing our garden with a bucolic, cow-speckled, borrowed landscape).
We are thrilled to be joined for this Open Garden by MARTIN BOETZ, Cooks Co-Op, who will be cooking up a storm, with pig & potatoes on the menu for Lunch in the Hayshed. JILLIE ARNOTT, The Cooking Tree, will have my ovens on the go, baking my favourite cakes for you to enjoy. OVVIO ORGANICS, who's beautiful teas we'll be serving, will see Jessica from Ovvio here on the Saturday to answer all your questions, while Ovvio founder, naturapath & herbalist ANTHIA KOULLOUROS will be here on the Sunday. If you have any recipe questions, then BARBARA SWEENEY of Food & Words/The Talking Cookbook is your gal! JOE VINKS has been out collecting twigs, driftwood & recycled timber to present a collection of quirky handcrafted furniture on the Croquet Lawn. I am delighted that CAMDEN PARK will have a stall with rare and special plants, and of course none of us who grow organic veg can live without Neil & Carmen of PATIO PLANTS (whatever I don't start from seed myself, I grow with PP's wonderful organic veg seedlings). Local flower farm EUGALO will have a stall...I am so excited about this! While many of us question where our food is grown, do we think to ask if our flowers are grown in Australia? @eugalo supply flowers to Sydney's leading florists and I'm so delighted they're joining us. A late addition to the list, about which I am also thrilled, is GEORGINA REID, founder of THE PLANTHUNTER: Georgina will be here on the Sunday to chat with you about all things botanical. I'm a huge fan of this online journal, presenting the world of botanics in a quirky, contemporary manner....get on board and have a look - it's so beautifully presented and truly captures the imagination, chasing tangents. Gosh....anything else? My Barn is filled with all sorts of useful and beautiful goods (it's near bursting at the seams) as well as a collection of plants we've been propagating. And Clemmie promises to do her Onion thing: The Absurdist Archive.
I just remembered....I'm giving talks twice a day! About Kitchen Gardening at 11am and Making the Garden at 2pm....it's just me, so don't expect anything spectacular, but I have some slides to show and some things you may like to see and hear. And absolutely not to be forgotten: EMILY SIMPSON is going to reinstate the LABYRINTH for the weekend. You can read the long saga of the Glenmore Labyrinth here. I couldn't resist including it for Open Garden as I discovered by pure chance that SATURDAY 2 MAY is WORLD LABYRINTH DAY! So come walk our Labyrinth too! (Click here for details of the Sydney Labyrinth.....I know some of you have yet to discover it for yourselves).
Just one more thing: our local Mt. Hunter Bush Fire Brigade are going to point you in the right direction for car parking in the paddock....so a gold coin tossed in their direction would be much appreciated - they need to raise much needed funds and are a very worthwhile cause - (like so may locals, I like to know they're just down the road and value the time they give and reassurance they provide to the local community).
Surely that's everything? Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. We'll all very much look forward to seeing you here. By the way....the garden isn't looking too bad either!
Very best wishes
