Still Life in Oils Workshop with Matilda Dumas, Sunday 27 September 2020

About Matilda Dumas  (instagram: @matilda_dumas)

Artist Matilda Dumas studied art in both Sydney and London, with a BA from the Sydney College of the Arts. Painting predominantly in oils on board or canvas, often using the mediums of wax and stand oil....."I paint expressively, referencing nature but abstracting from it.  My works are an emotional response to place, where I attempt to relay a feeling rather than just a literal image. Process is very important to me....I often start with a drawing or pleinair oil sketch, scaling up and abstracting from it back in the studio. This is a process of evaluating marks, scraping back and painting over, constantly trying to keep things loose, clean and fluid, without losing spontaneity in the mark making.  My work is underpinned by a strong understanding of form, line and colour derived from a long discipline of life drawing and pleinair painting". Workshop description:

This one day workshop is aimed at the oil painting beginner. "Painting in oils can be so daunting....but I'll let you into a secret, it's not" says Matilda. "There are so many myths surrounding oil painting...from how difficult it is, to knowing which brushes, paints, mediums to use. So this day is aimed at debunking those misconceptions and for you to just give it a go in a safe, carefree environment".

The day will begin at 10am with morning tea and an introduction and demonstration by Til. Then, you will each choose an object (or collection of objects) to paint. They will be simple everyday ones, like a plate, cup, jug or knife.  (If you have a favourite little plate, bring it along). You may choose to include a fruit, vegetable or budding stem from the garden. Matilda will then guide you through the making of an interesting composition, and how to render the object or collection through mixing mediums and using brushes and pallet knives. While she will give you helpful insights into how she would approach the painting and give you technical tips, Til says she's really just there to help you achieve a work that you're happy with. Beginners are welcome.

There will be a spring-garden-inspired lunch of course (hopefully worthy of its own still life!) before an afternoon spent solidly at your work, under Til's guidance. The list of inclusions is extensive...Matilda will provide all the materials you need: oil, boards, paints, pallets, brushes, pallet knives, mediums, mixing containers, thinners, rags.....you just need to bring your excited self! (And a smock, old shirt or apron to put on to avoid splashes...please don't wear your best dress).

*PLEASE NOTE COVID SAFE RULES WILL APPLY ON THE DAY AND WE ASK YOU TO NOT ATTEND IF YOU FEEL UNWELL...(should that be the unfortunate case, we ask you to please advise your situation as soon as possible so we can attempt to fill your space).

Cost $440.00 per person.
