A new garden book has crossed my path....one with glorious glimpses into hidden Australian gems....how tantalising!
It is with great delight that I invite you to come and hear CHRISTINE REID regale you with garden tales as she recounts the making of her about-to-be-released book, GARDENS ON THE EDGE. The date is set for FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER, when Christine will present myriad images, along with engaging conversation, to be followed by LUNCH (long-table, garden-inspired, seasonal, by you-know-who) during which Christine will interview our special guest DR JAMES BROADBENT, whose garden and house 'The Cottage' at Mulgoa, feature in the book. This will make for an enlightening discussion, with both Christine and James' thorough knowledge of garden history and combined passion for gardens, both old and new. A treat for us all is indeed in store!
Whilst I've had a sneak peak at a handful of images, for a description of what lies betwixt the cover, I'm going to quote the book's publisher Diana Hill: "In breathtaking images and insightful essays, Gardens on the Edge explores 18 Australian gardens that are defined by extraordinary horizons. Each of the featured landscapes - from every state and territory, from outback to city - is situated on the edge of a natural frontier: rainforest, bushland, desert, mountain range, volcanic crater lake, harbour, saltbush plains. In another sense, Australian gardens and their owners are always 'on the edge' (tell me about it Diana!) in dealing with the vagaries of nature, from drought to dust, fires to flood. In telling the stories of the gardens and their owners, Christine Reid reveals the diversity and character of the Australian continent - and celebrates the imagination and resilience of those who have met the challenges of creating, reconstructing or restoring 'their vision splendid' in an ancient and often-unforgiving land".
Well....I don't know about you but I can't wait to get hold of a copy! And I'm so thrilled that Christine has had the great pleasure of working with Diana Hill, publisher and Vivien Valk, designer, without whom The House and Garden at Glenmore would not be the book it is. And, to cap it all off, she's had photographer SIMON GRIFFITHS by her side to capture the fabulous images. What an adventure Christine has enjoyed....and now in turn, is ready to share with us.
I do hope you will join us, for what will be an altogether convivial day out. The garden here also....should be at its peak....if only it would just rain!
